Position Overview:
The Weed Scientist will lead the biological requirements of projects to drive a diverse portfolio for our liquid controls business segment, focusing on weed biology, weed ecology and herbicide/fertilizer interactions as related to management of weeds in residential turfgrass and landscape. The Weed Scientist will report to an R&D Product Development Manager in the Global Controls Category. The Weed Scientist should have weed control experience in cool and warm season turfgrasses, with familiarity of all current and emerging turfgrass herbicide active ingredients. The Weed Scientist will scout and test new technologies, recommend and develop new products, create enticing product claims and identify cost saving opportunities. The Weed Scientist will constantly mine the realm of technologies and match them to both articulated and unarticulated consumer needs to drive the controls category and our business.

To ensure success, the Weed Scientist will identify, plan and implement major biological research programs that deliver professional research results leading to clear decisions. The individual will effectively use internal and external resources including Scotts\’ research stations, universities and independent contract researchers. The Weed Scientist must develop strong partnerships with key cross-functional experts in R&D, marketing, regulatory, sourcing, and manufacturing to understand the possibilities and implications of innovative ideas and cost-savings. The Weed Scientist will participate extensively in their respective business segment as a hands-on consumer and a hands-on researcher to fully understand our products, competitors, gaps and develop cutting-edge biological research methods. The exact position level will depend upon the person\’s education and relevant work experience.

Key Responsibilities:
* Lead and conduct sound, professional biological research and summarize results into research reports, position papers, etc. to deliver project deliverables such as new products, new product label claims and cost savings per established timelines.
* Drive innovation and future direction by interaction with industry experts, universities, sources of consumer insights and regional research station experts to understand new technologies, new biological research methods, consumer trends and regional differences.
* Collaborate closely with colleagues in R&D, marketing, regulatory, sourcing, and manufacturing to ensure alignment on project goals, effective use of resources and explore innovation possibilities.
* Provide technical assistance to R&D, marketing, regulatory, sourcing, quality, and manufacturing when appropriate. Contribute to the Product Development Team to raise overall team contributions and performance.
* May lead/mentor Biology Specialists or Interns.

Qualifications:
* Ph.D. in Weed Science or related field (agronomy, soil science or horticulture ) is preferred. Masters of Science degree with significant industry experience in conducting sound, professional biological research with successful, relevant product launches will be strongly considered.
* Demonstrated ability to design and lead research programs to answer specific questions and/or solve problems and experience in conducting biological research to commercialize turf products or technologies.
* Possess a broad awareness of consumer lawn and garden products and practices; hands-on experience is desirable.
* Strong aptitude for weed science/turfgrass management conversions and mathematics.
* Experience performing Statistical Analysis using ARM, MiniTab, JMP or similar software programs.
* Scientific curiosity, personal drive and networking abilities to find breakthrough technologies, product improvements and cutting-edge methods.
* Strong verbal and written communication skills to communicate effectively with key stakeholders to influence direction, enable decisions and make progress.
