Description of Employer The Montana State University Northern Agricultural Research Center (NARC) is one of seven research centers distributed across Montana in the Department of Research Centers under the College of Agriculture and the Montana Agricultural Experiment Station. The NARC is located in the north-central region of Montana, 6 miles SE of Havre and was established in 1915 on the site of what was once Fort Assinniboine, a military post established in the 1880’s. The goal of its researchers is to serve Montana farmers and ranchers by seeking more profitable ways to produce, market and use agricultural products.

Description of duties

This position provides support to the cropping system and precision ag programs at the NARC, including the supervision of part-time/seasonal employees who assist with these programs.

Duties of this position include, but are not limited to:

  1. Assistance in the planning, design and implementation of field research projects, including the application of treatments to research plots;
  2. Field data recording and collection of research samples using scientifically prescribed methods;
  3. Data compilation, entry and analysis, including image analysis for root growth; summarization and interpretation of research results;
  4. Maintenance of plot and laboratory equipment and supplies;
  5. Support for other research projects and farm operations at the center.
Qualifications sought

Required Qualifications:

  1. B.S. in Agronomy, Plant Science, or related field;
  2. Experience in the implementation and maintenance of applied agronomic field research, including collecting and recording field data;
  3. Experience with dryland crops and related cropping systems common to the inter-mountain regions of the western United States;
  4. Experience with Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Office Suite.

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. M.S. in Agronomy, Plant Science or related field;
  2. Demonstrated ability to plan, design and implement field research including field plot layout and establishment; plot maintenance including fertilization, irrigation, and pest management; and precision harvesting of experimental plots;
  3. Experience with Statistical Analysis Systems (SAS) software or other statistical software;
  4. Experience in successfully supervising personnel;
  5. Grant, scientific paper and popular press report writing experience;
  6. Experience in the safe operation and transport of farm scale and plot scale equipment, including driving a pick-up truck while towing trailers or farm implements.
