Description of duties Nature and Purpose:  Direct the operation, management, personnel, and budgets of the Field and Research Service Unit (FRSU).  There are 17 outlying research stations ranging from 80 acres to over 1000 acres in size.  These stations are strategically located on key soils across the state and are representative of climatic and other environmental stress factors that are common to agriculture in the surrounding areas.  They serve as strategic, outdoor, research facilities for DASNR faculty and demonstration programs for use by the Oklahoma Cooperative Extension Service.  The Unit is also assigned responsibility for several on-campus research labs and greenhouses, including teaching facilities.  The FRSU should strive to create a favorable environment for project leaders to successfully complete quality research.

Major Responsibilities:

Research

  • Possess a thorough understanding and appreciation for agriculture research methods.
  • Provide vision, oversight, and management of operations at OAES research stations and other auxiliary research-based facilities.
  • Acquire and maintain necessary equipment for support of research operations.
  • Additionally, the Division is also responsible for the management, service, and accounting of a fleet of vehicles on research stations assigned to project leaders.
  • Consult and collaborate with other Unit Heads to develop and maintain infrastructure and personnel to effectively and efficiently accomplish needed research programs at FRSU facilities.
  • Provide input for annual reports required by project leaders working on the research stations including:  titles, objectives of experiments, duration, outcomes, and impact for each location.

Administration

  • Hire, supervise, and conduct annual appraisal of station superintendents.  Assist station superintendents with evolving staff issues at various locations.  Approximately 65 full-time employees are assigned to FRSU facilities.
  • Insure that all FRSU employees receive effective training in worker protection, farm safety, university guidelines, policies and procedures.
  • Work closely with DASNR Human Resources regarding position descriptions, recruiting, hiring, salary equity, appraisal, and termination of personnel, etc.
  • Develop, recommend, and manage budgets for personnel and operations (approximately $2.3 million per year) in conjunction with the Associate Vice President, OAES.
  • Work closely with members of the OAES administrative team to accomplish duties delegated to the FRSU. 
Qualifications sought  Qualifications:

  • Doctorate in agriculture-related discipline.
  • Experience managing personnel and operations budgets.
  • Experience working with crop and/or animal production.
  • Understanding of agricultural methods, research, and analysis of results.
  • Experience operating and maintaining research farm/ranch production equipment and facilities, including laboratories, greenhouses, and maintenance facilities.
  • Ability to successfully interact with support personnel within FRSU and integrate support operations to provide support to research scientists, students, and technical staff from other units using the FRSU facilities.
  • Ability to successfully interact with other professionals in developing team approaches to research and education programs in the disciplinary area.
  • Ability to successfully interact with DASNR administrators to recommend and justify unit personnel and operations budgets.

Employment Conditions:  The position is to be filled by June 1, 2017, or as soon thereafter as a suitable candidate is available, with 100% funding from the Oklahoma Agricultural Experiment Station.  The position is an eleven-month appointment (July 1 through May 31).  This position is accountable to the Associate Vice President of the Oklahoma Agricultural Experiment Station.  Salary will be commensurate with qualifications.  Continuation of this position is subject to performance, need, and available funding.
