This position will supervise crews that provide for the management of the natural resources on Jefferson County Open Space (JCOS) properties. Collect, analyze, and disseminate natural resource data and information. Prepare natural resource management plans based on sound scientific and biological principles. Complete reports that detail past, current and future needs to ensure best management practices are followed. Operate specialized heavy and light equipment, hand tools, and data collection devices in the performance of invasive species control, forest management, ecological restoration, wildlife management, inventory and monitoring of natural resources, and related work. Train staff. Manage budgets, contractors, and collaborators. Provide public outreach and communicate with other work units, departments and agencies. Interview candidates and make recommendations for hiring or terminating permanent and temporary staff.

Description of duties
  • Natural resource management. Operate and maintain forestry equipment and tools ranging from chainsaws to heavy equipment such as timber skidders. Operate and maintain other vegetation management-related equipment and tools including backpack sprayers, ATV/UTV-mounted sprayers, drill-seeders, and tractors. Train new employees on safe operation and maintenance of equipment and tools. Plan, implement, monitor, and evaluate a variety of resource assessments and management prescriptions on county-owned properties. Such assessments and prescriptions may include, but are not limited to: wildlife management, noxious weed management, planting native species, forest management, range management, prescribed fire, inventory and monitoring of natural resources, and the writing of management plans and reports.
  • Supervision. Work requires supervising the work for two or more full time employees (or equivalent), including conducting performance evaluations, prioritizing and assigning work, coordinating training activities, and making recommendations on hiring, termination, and disciplinary actions.
  • Management / administration. Define project tasks and resource requirements. Manage day-to-day operational aspects of projects, including budgets, contractors, and collaborators. Evaluate, purchase and maintain equipment and supplies necessary for projects. Interview and evaluate potential permanent and seasonal employees during the hiring process. Manage time accounting records and provide reports for supervisors and managers. Maintain herbicide application records for Colorado Department of Agriculture. Track purchases using a database. Lead or assist with development and management of grants and contracts in collaboration with other Open Space staff and work units.
  • Public outreach / engagement. Provide training for volunteer projects in collaboration with other Open Space staff. Coordinate necessary public information signs as needed for forest management, prescribed fire, invasive species treatment, wildlife management, and other resource management activities. Participate in public meetings as needed. Assist Lookout Mountain Nature Center with natural resource outreach information, both personal and non-personal. Provide information and participate when requested for Open Space Advisory Committee and various stakeholder groups. Interact with park neighbors and on-site park visitors concerning forest management, weed management, wildlife management, restoration, and/or prescribed fire activities. Engage with media in collaboration with other Open Space staff and work units.
  • Planning. Participate as member or team leader of park and regional management planning teams, collaborating as needed with other Open Space staff and work units. Participate as member of and/or lead teams implementing action items related to park and regional management plans. Lead or assist with intra-agency planning and collaboration.
Qualifications sought

Must have a bachelor\’s degree plus at least 1 year of work related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Prefer: 5+ years of experience; M.S. degree in Ecology, Forest Management, Plant Sciences, or related field; Professional certifications including (but not limited to) Department of Agriculture Qualified Supervisor License, Certified Forester, Firefighter Type 2, and/or Certified Ecologist.
