Description of duties ADMNISTRATION:

The Department Head will lead a large and diverse faculty and oversee the administration of all academic, research, and extension activities within the department. Faculty in the department are located at:

• University of Idaho, Moscow
• Palouse Research & Extension Center, Moscow
• Aberdeen Research & Extension Center, Aberdeen
• Parma Research & Extension Center, Parma
• Kimberly Research & Extension Center, Kimberly
• Twin Falls Research & Extension Center, Twin Falls
• Idaho Falls Research & Extension Center, Idaho Falls

The Department Head responsibilities include: management of departmental fiscal affairs; promoting a collaborative and productive work environment for faculty and staff; conducting annual performance reviews of faculty; oversight of faculty hiring and tenure and promotion processes; and representing the Department at the college and university levels, statewide, and with a wide variety of stakeholders. The Head will work closely with an associate department head to ensure coordination between on- and off-campus programs. The Head also works with the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences (CALS) Development and Communications unit to promote programs and fundraising for the department.

Assistance with off-campus faculty members will be facilitated by a departmental leadership structure to be organized at the discretion of the incoming Department Head to assist in the management of the diverse faculty group.

TEACHING:

In collaboration with the CALS Associate Dean/Director of Academic Programs, the Department Head provides leadership for undergraduate and graduate instructional programs in the department. In addition, the successful candidate may have an opportunity to teach a course in his/her area of expertise.

RESEARCH/SCHOLARSHIP:

Qualifications sought MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

PhD in a closely related discipline.

Qualifications to meet tenure at the rank of professor in an academic unit within the college.

Demonstrated excellence and productivity in research (grantsmanship, publications, etc.).

Experience in nationally peer-reviewed grant administration.

Demonstrated excellence in teaching or outreach.

Ability to communicate effectively and coordinate with diverse groups such as faculty, industry personnel, and government officials.

Understanding of and commitment to program-wide diversity and serving underrepresented stakeholders.

Applicants who are selected as final possible candidates must be able to pass a criminal background check.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Previous administrative experience or evidence of administrative skills required to lead a large academic department.

Candidates should have a demonstrated work experience in some aspect of plant science.

Fiscal management skills or experience in administering grants and/or department budgets.

Leadership skills and experience to implement the University, College, and Department Strategic Plans.
