Description of duties

CÉROM is recruiting a Weed Scientist.

As a part of their duties, the researcher will develop and manage their own projects in collaboration with the CÉROM team and other organizations.  They will responsible for applying for grants to co-finance their projects. The chosen candidate will orient their research according to the needs and priorities of the grain sector.

Reporting to the Director of Administration, the Weed Scientist’s duties include:

  • Developing and executing research projects relevant to the priorities of agricultural producers, the Quebec Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAPAQ) and industry in the weed science sector.
  • Researching and documenting practices to assist agricultural producers in implementing sustainable farming practices and improving pesticide management.
  • Coordinating a public service for the detection of herbicide-resistant weeds.
  • Updating documentation on the state of herbicide-resistant weeds in Quebec.
  • Developing new approaches and strategies for the detection and control of herbicide-resistant weeds and advising producers on the risks of using herbicides in crops.
  • Use molecular methods to identify and catalog sources of herbicide resistance.
  • Coordinating experimental herbicide trials to address specific issues related to weed control.
  • Participating in the weed science section of the Phytosanitary Alert Network (RAP)
  • Ensuring the transfer of knowledge and results to the research community (via scientific articles, posters, presentation, etc.), as well as to the partners in extension, and providing up-to-date and relevant information to Quebec agricultural producers.
  • Integrating sustainable development practices in research activities.
Qualifications sought

A graduate degree in a relevant discipline is required. A minimum of five years of pertinent work experience is required for applicants possessing an M.Sc.; those with a Ph.D. may have less. The successful candidate will be recognized for their strategic vision while possessing a ‘grassroots’ knowledge of agricultural production. Excellent written and spoken French are required, as well as proficiency in English. The position is located in Saint-Mathieu-de-Beloeil, QC.
