Description of duties General Summary:
Scotts products must be tested and appropriately labeled prior to distribution, sale and use. Regulations such as those implemented by CPSC, DOT, EPA, OSHA and state laws (e.g. Prop 65) require classification and labeling for consumer and professional products distributed, sold or used in North America. The Senior Toxicologist will be independently responsible for determining toxicology testing and/or data waiver strategies and conducting risk assessments to support product launches. The Senior Toxicologist will manage GLP, non-GLP and in vitro toxicology studies and/or authoring waiver requests; develop product precautionary labeling; and report adverse effects. In addition, the Senior Toxicologist will develop external relationships with trade associations, government regulators, task forces, and will proactively address product safety issues that will impact our business.

Key Work Performed:
* Independently determines toxicology testing or waiver requirements and interprets those results into appropriate precautionary labeling and other hazard communication documents (e.g., CPSC, EPA, DOT).
* Manages Adverse Effects reporting as well as Poison Control Center and spill response contracts.
* Independently prepares hazard and risk assessments for product labeling and compliance (e.g., Prop 65).
* Monitors government regulatory activities and represents Scotts through a network of external resources via leadership in task forces/trade organizations, etc.
* Participates in team meetings and supports new product launches or product changes.
* Keeps current on product safety requirements through self study/attendance at conferences/training seminars.
* Independently communicates and responds in a timely manner to Agency questions and requests.
* Independently interacts and negotiates with appropriate regulatory authorities on product safety issues relevant to the business.

Minimum Requirements:
* Education: Masters degree or equivalent professional experience in relevant science or technical disciplines. PhD and board certification (D.A.B.T.) or ability to sit for board certification preferred.
* Experience: 5 or more years relevant work experience. Related disciplines may include toxicology, ecotoxicology, biochemistry, pharmacology, etc.

Knowledge:
* Sound understanding of toxicology principles and the scientific basis for toxicity testing.
* Experience with toxicity test methods (GLP, non-GLP and in vitro) and risk assessments for consumer products safety compliance.
* Demonstrated expertise related to the classification and labeling of consumer packaged goods (including those regulated by CPSC, DOT, EPA and OSHA).
* Knowledge of product development processes and background offering safety support in product development.
* Ability to offer thought leadership on strategic safety recommendations.
* Awareness of other relevant registration requirements (e.g. pesticide, fertilizer etc.).
* Demonstrated expertise related to time and/or project management principles.
