Description of duties

Summary

The Agronomist will support research and development (R&D) activities related to See & Spray with a current focus on weed control in cotton and soybean production systems.  Furthermore, the Agronomist will also assist in the long-term goals of R&D, which includes expansion of the See & Spray technology to include other crop production inputs.  In addition, the position will involve supporting field demonstrations of commercial machines to customers and key influencers.

The Agronomist reports to the Sr. Agronomist and maintains significant contact with the engineering staff.  The Agronomist must have, or be able to rapidly develop, row crop market knowledge (specifically in cotton and soybean production systems), technical understanding of the complexities of See & Spray machines and how this relates to efficacy and efficiency in the field.  Desirable candidates should have skills and/or demonstrated interest in the areas of cotton and/or row crop agricultural production, computer usage, tractor and sprayer setup, and agricultural technology.  The candidate should be comfortable working in a rural environment and interacting with agricultural producers, scientific researchers, and engineers.

Travel: 20% travel to Mid-South and Plains Regions (e.g., Arkansas, Missouri, Texas) 

Responsibilities

  • Design and conduct laboratory and/or greenhouse research related to the application and efficacy of crop protection chemicals, specifically herbicides, using See & Spray.
  • Travel to field research locations and be responsible for See & Spray applications in collaboration with contract research organizations and/or universities.
  • Educate and support Engineering staff on topics related to agronomic production systems
  • Ensure all work is documented clearly and communicated in a timely manner (e.g. conference notes, research reports, etc).
  • Attend and present research at scientific conferences that support R&D activities.
  • The position is located in Sunnyvale, CA, but will require travel to various research locations in California and the main cotton and soybean growing regions of the United States.  
Qualifications sought

Requirements

  • 20% travel 
  • B.S. degree in Agronomy, Soil Science, or Crop Protection with at least 2 years of professional experience
  • Proven record of conducting field research trials in cotton, soybeans, or other row crops
  • Ability to understand and interact with agricultural technology and machinery
  • Strong statistical and analytical skills
  • Exceptional understanding of row crop production agriculture
  • Ability to work well in a highly collaborative and multidisciplinary environment
  • Willing to live in California and work out of the Sunnyvale location

Preferred

  • M.S. degree in Weed Science
  • Experience working with ARM (Agricultural Research Manager) software
  • Experience with herbicides, including adjuvants
  • Experience conducting and evaluating weed control field trials
  • Experience with pesticide application technology
