Description of duties The Growing Media and Mulch team is seeking a Biology Specialist to participate in the creation of new soil and mulch products for the Miracle-Gro and Scotts brands. The Biology Specialist is part of a cross-functional team that connects consumer needs and market intelligence with technology to create product solutions. The Biology Specialist supports Scientists by executing laboratory, greenhouse and field studies. Areas of research are in growing media (potting mixes and soils) and other gardening products.

Key Responsibilities:
* Prepare, establish, maintain and evaluate plants in field, greenhouse and laboratory trials.
* Collect and record experimental data in laboratory notebooks and databases.
* Analyze data using computer software programs.
* Collaborate with internal and external resources.
* Facilitate cooperative research projects with universities.
* Greenhouse and field crop production and maintenance.
* Ship chemicals, manage waste and chemical inventory, and support safety program.

* Master’s degree is preferred, in Horticulture, Agronomy, Plant Physiology, or Soil Science with an emphasis on plant growth assessments.
* Broad awareness of consumer lawn and garden products and practices; hands-on experience is desirable.
* Strong working knowledge in one or more areas of biological science and strong awareness of research principles including methods, protocols, observations, data, reports, etc.
* Must exhibit scientific curiosity by posing probing questions, challenges, current methods, and processes.
* Driven to identify opportunities and increase overall contributions.
* Communicate effectively through work on project teams, conferences, tours, etc.
* Manage multiple demands through strong organizational skills, efficiency, and prioritization.
* Conduct trials with minimal oversight to completion, including initiation, data collection, and preliminary data analysis.
* Experience growing and maintaining plants.
* Familiarity with field plot design and statistical analysis.
* Experience with greenhouse and field plot evaluations.
* Aptitude for learning new lab techniques.
* Ability to operate garden maintenance equipment such as tillers.
* Attention to detail and excellent computer skills.
* Networking skills to build support system and seek out new technologies.
