Description of duties Opportunity:
The Director of Growing Media (GM) Quality NA is a key leadership role in the QEHS organization. The primary responsibility is direct oversight of product quality and process improvements for our growing media manufacturing platform in North America with over 46 facilities (Retail & Professional). They will serve on the QEHS leadership team to create and guide overall quality policy. This role will also serve as an extended member of the GM Operations leadership team. Additional major responsibilities of this role include oversight of quality for raw materials including sphagnum peat moss and the quality of finished goods sold into professional markets.This position will be based at The Scotts Miracle-Gro world headquarters in Marysville, a suburb of Columbus, OH. In This Role the Director Growing Media Quality Will:
* Create and manage quality systems, processes and execution for the North American Growing Media manufacturing network including direct supervision of four regional quality managers.
* Create and manage quality systems and execution for the Growing Media professional business and provide quality support for the Hawthorne business.
* Ensure that no significant quality incidents impact our ability to serve our customers or delight our consumers.
* Create and implement processes to ensure products comply with applicable regulations in the US & Canada.
* Serve as main point of contact for incident management for quality issues.
* Provide leadership of supplier quality management program for Growing Media bulk materials. Coordination of supplier quality for other components through our manager of supplier quality.
* Serve as a key representative and facilitator for quality with other internal and external groups.
* Support and lead a robust quality continuous improvement process that yields ongoing quality, cost savings and operational improvements.
* Serve as a key leader on the global quality team.
* Participate in external organizations (US Composting Council, etc.) to facilitate industry wide standards are aligned with Scotts’; objectives for Growing Media.
* Work on special projects as assigned that may have cross-company scope and impact.

The Perfect Person Will Have:
* BS degree in Engineering or other technical areas (chemistry, etc).
* MBA desired.
* 10 or more years experience in manufacturing operations or similar functions.
* Experience in a consumer packaged goods company.
* 3 or more years in quality management.
* Prior experience in continuous improvement programs (lean, six sigma, etc), preferably from a leadership position.
* Working knowledge of statistical tools and analysis is a must for this position.
* Proficiency in MS Office Applications (Excel, Word, Powerpoint).
* SAP experience preferred.
* Strong quality and manufacturing knowledge.
* Statistical training (i.e., Six sigma green belt or higher).
* Familiarity with statistical analysis packages (ie. Minitab).
* Ability to manage quality function across a group of remote direct reports.
* Proficiency in presenting to large groups.
* Strong business acumen and analytical skills.
* Ability to influence members of cross functional teams.
* Experience in driving change in a large organization.
* Demonstrated examples of self-motivation and of achieving results.
* Capability of taking unpopular positions when necessary.
* Willingness and ability to travel up to and at times above 50%.
