Extension Assistant Professor-Cranberry Agricultural Scientist with UMass-Amherst Cranberry Station in East Wareham, MA

Type of position he UMass Cranberry Station invites applications for a full-time, 12 month, non-tenure track appointment as Extension Assistant Professor – Cranberry Agricultural Scientist. The successful candidate will develop and lead a research and extension program in a systems-based approach to cranberry production, with emphasis on integrating with and complementing the disciplines currently represented at the Cranberry Station. Earliest appointment date is May 1, 2018.

Description of Employer This position will be located at the UMass Cranberry Station in East Wareham. The successful candidate will apply for adjunct status in a department within the UMass Amherst College of Natural Sciences and will collaborate with faculty, students, staff, and partners in industry and government. They will be a member of a group of Extension faculty affiliated with the University’s Center for Agriculture, Food and the Environment and will be expected to participate in occasional team meetings and activities. We share a fundamental commitment to teach and serve a diverse population, including professional practitioners and the broader public.

Description of Location The UMass Cranberry Station, founded in 1910, is located in East Wareham, MA near Cape Cod and one hour south of Boston and one hour east of Providence, RI. Our home campus at Amherst is approximately 2.5 hours away.

Description of duties

Responsibilities include:  Conducting original applied research on integrated approaches to cranberry production and transferring research-based information to the MA cranberry industry; securing extramural funding and publishing results; engaging with cranberry researchers throughout North America to increase knowledge on issues that limit identified industry production goals; and responding to real time critical industry needs related to maximizing production efficiency.

Qualifications sought

A Ph.D. in Horticulture, Plant Science or related discipline is required. Professional experience in systems-based agriculture, climatology, precision agriculture, decision processing, ecology, production techniques and/or nutrition is highly desirable.  Expertise in fruit crops is preferred. Individuals with skills that can complement and integrate with the disciplines represented by current Station personnel are highly desirable. The candidate must have the ability to conduct applied research and educational programs, the ability to integrate research findings into the development of educational and training materials to solve problems, and the ability to work collaboratively as well as the flexibility to communicate with individuals of diverse backgrounds ranging from academic to the general public.  The candidate must have the aptitude for both leadership and team membership roles and effective communication and interpersonal skills.  Demonstrated skills with computer use, data analysis, and electronic communication and demonstrated success in the development and writing of grant proposals are required.
