Graduate Research Assistantship-Weed Science with North Carolina State University in Raleigh, NC

Type of position A Ph.D. level Graduate Research Assistantship is available to conduct research on herbicide resistance management in soybean in North Carolina. The research will focus on the development of strategies to monitor herbicide resistant biotypes in weeds of economic importance in soybean production in North Carolina. The student will use biochemical and molecular tools as well as statistical and demographic models to develop effective monitoring strategies that allow early detection and mapping of herbicide resistant traits.

The incumbent will work under the guidance of Dr. Wesley Everman and Dr. Ramon Leon.

Date position available It is anticipated that the incumbent will begin during the Summer 2018, although earlier employment will also be considered.
Description of duties
  • Conducting laboratory, greenhouse, and field research relevant to weed management in North Carolina cropping systems;
  • Conducting data collection, analysis, and preparation of peer-reviewed and extension publications;
  • Travel to other research units throughout North Carolina as needed;
  • Provide technical and academic support to other projects of the Weed Science Program.
Qualifications sought

Required Qualifications:

  • M.Sc. in Weed Science, Agronomy, Crop Science, Soil Science or a closely related field of study that has equipped the applicant with the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position
  • Excellent written and oral English skills
  • Ability to meet the entrance requirements of North Carolina State University Graduate School and the Department of Crop and Soil Sciences
  • Self-motivated and highly organized
  • Willingness to conduct field research away from the Raleigh campus.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Agricultural field experience
  • Strong analytical and statistical skills
  • Strong laboratory skills
