The position nominated “Associate Senior Lecture” corresponds approximately to an US assistant professor tenure track position. Hence, we are seeking a junior researchers and give precedence to researchers with 7 years or less work experience since their dissertation.

Description of Employer The Department of Crop Production Ecology is looking for an associate senior lecturer in plant ecology with specialisation in weed biology. The department is together with the Department of Ecology a part of an inspiring research environment at the Ecology centre in Uppsala. We carry out education and research on plants for food, feed and energy. The research is production oriented with focus on crop stands on arable land, and interactions with the surrounding landscape. The department is investigating how different production methods and cropping systems affect yields, product quality and the surrounding environment.

A position as associate senior lecturer is a qualifying employment that constitutes the first step in an academic career at SLU. An associate senior lecturer has the right during his or her employment to apply for promotion to senior lecturer on the basis of criteria established when the position as associate senior lecturer was announced.

Description of duties

Subject area

The subject covers plant ecology with specialisation in weed biology, i.e., the biology and ecology of weed species and the development of sustainable weed control strategies.

Duties

The associate senior lecturer shall develop his or her own research line within the area of plant ecology with specialisation in weed biology. This covers the integration of ecological theory with applied weed science to promote ecological sustainability in agriculture. The proprietor will work on field research by using the NJ faculty long-term field trials, as a resource. The research is expected to be done in close collaboration with colleagues at the department and the rest of SLU, as well as through national and international collaborations.

The holder of the position is also expected to:

apply for external funding and publish scientific papers
participate in postgraduate education as a co-supervisor
teach at basic (bachelor) and advanced (master) level
take pedagogic courses
communicate and collaborate with relevant stakeholders in agricultural industry

Qualifications sought

Qualifications:

Candidates must hold a PhD or have equivalent academic qualifications. Priority will be given to candidates who have received a PhD or equivalent qualifications no longer than seven years prior to the application deadline. For an appointment as associate senior lecturer, the candidate must be scientifically proficient in the subject area of plant ecology and weed biology. Experience with research environments outside of SLU equivalent to a post-doctoral period, or a PhD degree from another university or institute is expected. Good ability to communicate in written and spoken English is required.

 

ssessment criteria:

Emphasis is primarily placed on the qualitative indicators of the applicant’s academic skills. Special attention will be paid to the applicant’s specific competence in specialised areas of relevance to the overall subject of plant ecology with specialisation in weed biology. Furthermore, the applicant should have research experience in crop production. The assessment also includes evaluating the applicant’s ability to develop an independent line of research within the research field, and to meet the requirements for promotion to senior lecturer in the context of the employment qualifications. Emphasis will also be paid to skills in communication and ability to work across several of the department’s research areas. Good skills in collaboration as well as teaching experience are considered as merits.
