Description of duties

The Assistant/Associate Professor – weed scientist is a non-tenure track faculty member of the University of Arkansas Division of Agriculture Cooperative Extension Service who provides leadership in applied research and extension programs related to best management practices in weed management of rice, soybean and other crop systems as assigned.

The successful candidate will be responsible for creating, designing and implementing an extramurally-funded and widely recognized Extension and Applied Research program in crop weed management as well as supporting adoption of relevant best management practices for rice, soybean and other cropping systems. Applied research to address existing and emerging weed problems, including herbicide-resistant weeds and sustainable management technology will be a priority along with an effective, high impact extension education program to assure broad adoption. Dedicated advisory support to county agents, consultants, growers, industry and other stakeholders as needed will be a given.

Ability to obtain & interpret research information. Ability to anticipate changing trends in assigned discipline area & develop programs to address those changes. Knowledge of the principles & techniques of adult education. Knowledge of the program planning process. Ability to work effectively with a variety of professional & lay audiences. Ability to communicate & convey ideas effectively to faculty, stakeholder groups, & clientele. Knowledge of social, economic, political & cultural factors affecting adult & youth learning. Physical & mental ability to effectively perform the duties & responsibilities of the job, including long & irregular hours of work & frequent in-state & out-of-state travel.

Qualifications sought

This position requires a Ph.D. in Weed Science or highly related field. Excellent written and oral communication skills are required. Knowledge of herbicide chemistry and herbicide symptomology required.

Documented ability to work effectively in a team setting and with different audiences is required.

Physical and mental ability to effectively perform all responsibilities including long and irregular hours and frequent travel are required.

Driving is required and the candidate must have transportation for use on the job with liability insurance in effect.

Specialized experience in applied field research, field demonstrations, extension education, and diverse crop production is preferred. Experience in team research and programs preferred. Experience in management of research equipment, extramural grants, personnel preferred.
