Description of duties

Our Opportunity:
Reporting to an R&D Product Development Director in the Global Gardens Category, the R&D GM Materials Technology Development Manager will lead a team of individuals focused on raw materials and technologies that impact all areas of the growing media category including In-Ground Soil, Potting Mix, and Professional products. The Technology Development Manager will be working in a hands-on environment with a multi-functional team of 2-3 individuals to evaluate new raw materials such as compost, wood fiber, and peat extenders that ultimately lead to developing new products, creating enticing product claims and identifying cost saving opportunities. The individual should have a solid scientific foundation, experience with working with Manufacturing and Marketing, and demonstrated strong communication skills.

To ensure success, the Technology Development Manager will collaborate with other key Scientists and Specialists in the Gardens team to identify, plan and implement research programs that deliver professional research results leading to clear decisions. The Manager must develop strong partnerships with key cross-functional experts in R&D, Marketing, Regulatory, Sourcing, and Manufacturing to understand the possibilities and implications of innovative ideas and cost-savings. The Manager will participate extensively in their respective business segment as a hands-on consumer and a hands-on researcher to fully understand our products, competitors, gaps and develop cutting-edge research methods.

In This Role the Manager Technology Development Will:
* Lead and manage a small R&D team of biologists and/or formulators to support the Growing Media Materials Technology Platform.
* Partner with key stakeholders including Marketing, Supply Chain, Regulatory, and Technical Services to support projects and work for the Growing Media business.
* Coordinate with entire US and Canada Growing Media R&D team to ensure efficiency in project work and load.
* Drive innovation and future direction by interaction with industry experts, universities, sources of consumer insights and regional research station experts to understand new technologies, new biological research methods, consumer trends and regional differences specific to raw materials.
* Collaborate closely with colleagues in R&D, Marketing, Regulatory, Sourcing, and Manufacturing to ensure alignment on project goals, effective use of resources and explore innovation possibilities.
* Serve as a leader by identifying opportunities followed by compelling communication and facts to implement change.
* Present research findings to executive leadership.
* Mentor and coach team members to raise the overall performance of the team.

The Perfect Person Will Have:
* M.S. or Ph.D. in Engineering, Chemistry, Biology, or Horticulture a plus. Minimum Bachelor’s degree in similar fields. Minimum 3 years of experience in R&D or similar field.
* A broad awareness of consumer lawn and garden products and practices; hands-on experience is desirable.
* Strong verbal and written communication skills to communicate effectively with key stakeholders to influence direction, enable decisions, and make progress.
* Experience managing multiple demands through strong organizational skills, efficiency and prioritization.
* Ability to learn new Technologies and Material evaluations while providing technical leadership to product and project teams.
* Excellent time management skills.
