Description of duties

PRIMARY FUNCTION
Develop, improve, and manage the applied research infrastructure at the University of Illinois Department of Crop Sciences’ on-campus and two off-campus research facilities with a budgetary model that balances research excellence with financial stability.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Coordinate and facilitate the field research needs of internal and external researchers at all research farms within the Department of Crop Sciences
  • Oversee management of facilities, equipment, irrigation, drainage, research personnel, and budgets for all research farms within the Department of Crop Sciences
  • Create and develop innovative on-farm research facilities
  • Develop and implement a revenue-generating model for the research farms that includes a strategy to increase grain sales revenue.
  • Market the diverse farm outputs from all Crop Science farms
  • Promote and coordinate safety and training programs for all farm staff with the Office of Research
  • Diversify advancement opportunities by partnering with industry and commodity groups
  • Increase efficiencies of general farm research operations, identify cost savings, and streamline processes and procedures.
  • Coordinate the daily capture of field data into marketable data sets for interested researchers
  • Facilitate outreach and educational activities at the research farms
  • Supervise employees including assigning duties and responsibilities while enhancing teamwork and cooperation between units
Qualifications sought

EDUCATION

Required: MS degree in Crop Sciences, Agronomy, Soil Science, Plant Pathology, Entomology, Business or related field

Preferred: PhD in Crop Sciences, Agronomy, Soil Science, Plant Pathology, Entomology or related field

EXPERIENCE

Required: Three years of agronomic management, farm business, or agronomic research experience

Preferred: Five years of agronomic management, farm business, or agronomic research experience

KNOWLEDGE REQUIREMENTS

Required: Knowledge of crop production practices for agronomic crops. Knowledge of agricultural research including statistical analysis of agricultural data.

Preferred: Data acquisition and management, marketing program development, and agri-business management
