Assistant Professor – Agronomist/ Weed Science Specialist with University of Wyoming in Powell, WY

Type of position The Department of Plant Sciences within the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, University of Wyoming seeks applications for an 11-month, tenure-track Assistant Professor – Agronomist / Weed Science Specialist. The appointment will incorporate research, extension, teaching, and service. The incumbent will be stationed at the Powell Research and Extension Center (PREC) in northwest Wyoming but will be expected to engage with extension clientele statewide.

Description of Location The Powell Research and Extension Center (PREC) is one mile north of Powell on Highway 295 at an elevation of 4,374 feet. The 30-year average annual precipitation is 6.67 inches. May and June are the only two months that exceed one inch of average precipitation.

One hundred seventy-five of the 220 acres at the PREC are irrigated cropland. Research focuses include agronomic weed control, irrigation, cropping systems, high tunnel production, variety performance testing, and alternative crops. Description of duties

Responsibilities of the incumbent:

  • Perform scholarly and applied research concentrating on emerging issues in weed management and irrigated crop production in the Bighorn Basin of Wyoming.
  • Publish results in peer-reviewed scientific journals and other outlets.
  • Seek internal and external funding to support weed science research and extension.
  • Develop a weed science program with potential for national and/or international recognition.
  • Build an innovative extension program relevant to weed management in Wyoming.
  • Teach course(s) in weed science, seed science, or related discipline as part of the Department of Plant Sciences curriculum.
  • Recruit and train graduate students in the plant sciences.
  • Communicate effectively with Wyoming’s producers, collaborators from UW and other institutions, and agricultural industry to help PREC and Department of Plant Sciences to improve the sustainability of crop production.
  • Serve on committees and advisory boards as needed.
Qualifications sought

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in agronomy, weed science, weed management, or related field at the time of hire;
  • Evidence of potential to design and conduct quality weed science research in crops;
  • Demonstrated experience communicating with producers or other diverse audiences;
  • Demonstrated experience with field crop management and practices used in a research/production setting.

Desired Qualifications:

  • A strong understanding of crop and weed biology;
  • Demonstrated efforts to obtain competitive grants for conducting novel research;
  • Demonstrated efforts to develop, deliver, and support innovative extension programs;
  • Demonstrated commitment to meaningful engagement with multiple stakeholders and partners;
  • Demonstrated experience teaching undergrad/grad students and familiarity with distance education.
