Description of duties

The Department of Horticulture is seeking a Faculty Research Assistant. This is a full-time (1.0 FTE), 12-month, fixed term professional faculty position. Reappointment is at the discretion of the Department Head.

This position will lead the field research activities in weed management in perennial horticultural crops. The incumbent is responsible for design and implementation of research protocols, compiling research reports, outreach activities, and equipment maintenance. Other responsibilities include editing extension and research publications as needed, and supervising undergraduate and summer employees.

Qualifications sought

B.S. degree in Crop Science, Soil Science, Horticulture, Plant Science, Agricultural Science, Agronomy, or related field

Demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity.

Experience in operating and maintaining farm equipment, including backpack and tractor mounted farm implements and sprayers.

Experience with data management and statistical software (spreadsheets, word processing, and email), and ability to learn new procedures and software programs quickly.

Excellent interpersonal skills and a commitment to team-oriented management. Ability to clearly communicate job expectations and provide training when needed.

Excellent attention to detail.

Self-motivated and excellent organizational skills with the ability to prioritize multiple projects and meet deadlines.

Ability to make good decisions under conditions of unexpected changes.

Strong oral and written communication skills.

Ability to lift 50 lbs and work outdoors in all weather conditions.

Hands-on experience in handling and applying pesticides.

Must have or be able to obtain an Oregon Pesticide Applicator license within three months of the start date and maintain it throughout employment.

This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per OSU Standard 576-055-0000 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.

This position requires driving a university vehicle on behalf of the university; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a motor vehicle history check, possess and maintain a current, valid driver’s license in their state of residence, be determined to be position qualified and self-report convictions as per University Policy 05-030.
