Description of duties One graduate research assistantship is available in the area of Plant molecular biology and Genetics to pursue a M.S. in Plant Sciences at Tennessee State University starting January 2019 or Aug 2019. The graduate student will conduct field, greenhouse and laboratory experiments to identify the resistant mutants to herbicides in a soybean mutation population. We will use next generation sequencing technologies and TILLING strategies for this project. Genome editing techniques will be also used to target soybean genes involved in important agronomic traits such as herbicide resistant genes as well. 

The student will be in charge of establishing field/greenhouse/lab studies, collecting and analyzing data, writing manuscripts and preparing presentations for profesinal meetings. Depending on the interests and abilities, the students will also be involved in metnoring undegraduate students and conducting summer camps for middle scholl students as well. 

Qualifications sought Prospective students should hold a Bachelor’s degree in biotechnology, plant sciences, biology, or other related fields. Desired qualifications include molecular biology knowledge, familiarity with molecular techniques such as DNA and RNA extraction, PCR and qPCR, gel electrophoresis, sanger sequencing, excellent oral and written communication skills, field research experience, and an interests in field studies. Other desirable qualities include a strong work ethic, ability to work independently, and experience with managing work flows. The ideal candidate will be highly motivated, thorough, and organized. The candidate must also meet the admission requirements of Tennessee State University. International applicants are are encouraged to apply; however, a proof of english profficicny TOEFL (minimum scores 550 PBT, 80 iBT), IELTS (6.5 band score) is required. The candidates for the M.S. degree in Agricultural Sciences must have the equivalent of the bachelor’s degree with a major in one of the Agricultural Sciences and a minimum quality grade point average (GPA) of 2.50 on a 4.00 point scale and a minimum score of 290 on the GRE (verbal and quantitative, or verbal, quantitative and subject), or 370 on the MAT. Applicants must also submit three letters of recommendation and a personal statement indicating their preferred concentration or specific discipline of interest.
