Description of duties

Position Summary

Purdue University is seeking a self-motivated individual to manage daily activities associated with turf weed research experiments and the turf extension program under the direction of the Turfgrass Extension Specialist. The selected individual will also work cooperatively with other staff to implement turfgrass and weed control research conducted at the William H. Daniel Turfgrass Research and Diagnostic Center as well as offsite on golf courses and commercial turf. Duties will include field and greenhouse plot preparation, planting, irrigation, general maintenance, nutrient and pesticide applications, data collection and entry, harvesting, and data summarization for research and demonstration projects. May communicate with collaborators at other institutions and organizations for coordination of project-wide goals, and contribute to project reporting. The position is expected to assist in applying for research grants and writing peer-reviewed journal articles. Laboratory experience is also a plus. The individual will also be responsible for assisting with the implementation of regional seminars and workshops and for providing assistance in the development of materials for extension education programs.  

 

Essential Functions

55% – Field and greenhouse plot preparation, planting, irrigation, general maintenance, nutrient and pesticide applications, data collection and entry, harvesting, and data summarization for research and demonstration projects.

25% – Responsible for data summarization for research and demonstration projects and assisting the principle investigator in writing summary reports for research trials and co-authoring peer-reviewed journal articles. May communicate with collaborators at other institutions and organizations for coordination of project-wide goals, and contribute to project reporting.

15% – Assist with organization and implementation of regional seminars, workshops, and conferences and with presenting education programs for turf professionals and master gardeners.

5% – Train and supervise undergraduate and graduate students in field work, maintenance, and data collection and entry.

Qualifications sought

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Agronomy, Horticulture, Natural Resources and Environmental Science, Plant Pathology, Turf Science, Weed Science, or related field

Experience:

  • Three years experience in a turfgrass research program or four years managing turfgrass on golf courses or athletic fields
  • Experience with designing, applying, evaluating, analyzing, and writing-up field experiments

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Certifications:

  • Computer skills, particularly experience with spreadsheets and word processing are essential as well as an ability to organize electronic files
  • Strong oral and written communication skills as well as interpersonal skills 
  • Excellent problem-solving skills
  • Excellent organizational and record keeping skills with high attention to detail
  • Ability to work with, train, and supervise undergraduate and graduate students
  • Ability to work autonomously and understand safety and standard operating procedures
  • Ability to maintain working areas in an organized, efficient, and safe manner
  • Ability to interpret manuals, research procedures, and pesticide labels
  • The employee must be able to perform physical work duties such as lifting a minimum of 50  pounds and to work on their feet for extended periods
  • Ability to work both in the lab and outdoors in sometimes inclement weather
  • Ability to operate pesticide application equipment including small-plot and greenhouse sprayers
  • Valid Indiana driver’s license
  • Ability to calibrate, operate, and maintain field equipment and research instruments
  • Ability to obtain valid Indiana pesticide applicator’s license within two months
  • In-state travel and overnight stays (approximately 5 nights/year) required with opportunities to travel regionally and nationally to conferences
