The Central Oregon Agricultural Research and Extension Center (COAREC) is located at the epicenter of 60,000 acres of irrigated cropland and in the center of central Oregon seed production. High-value specialty crops provide the core of this progrssive agricultural community. COAREC contributes value to OSU and the local agricultural community through research, outreach and engagement with stakeholders, including industry, non-governmental organizations, and the public, through research that addresses pressing agricultural questions. Research and outreach responsiblities at COAREC emphasize high value specialty crops (including vegetable seed, grass seed, peppermint and seed potato along with others) grown in the high desert of central Oregon.

The incumbent is expected to develop an extramurally funded research and Extension program in Integrated Pest Management (IPM) with a primary focus on weed science. The area of research specialization is open but should be focused on pressing issues, including but not limited to the identification of biochemical and/or genetic mechanisms underlying the proliferation of invasive species and resistance to herbicides. Preference will be given to applicants who plan to utilize “next generation” “-omics” technologies to solve weed science problems and who plan to integrate innovative biological control measures to manage invasive species in agro- or natural ecosystems. This position has the possiblity to explore innovative biological control measures utilizing integrated pest and production management practices and research in both agricultural weeds, regional invasive species, pest management and other appropriate areas of research. Applied aspects of the research program will be guided by experience/interest of the incumbent and regional needs identified by stakeholders. Research should be integrated with analyses of cultural practices used in pest management programs of agronomic crops that are widely grown throughout the region.
