Description of duties

Virginia Tech is inviting applications for an Assistant Professor of Weed Science focused on applied research and extension in vegetable, oilseed, fiber, and grain crops. This is a 9-month (academic year), tenure track position with equal responsibilities in Research and Extension and will have academic affiliation with the School of Plant and Environmental Sciences (https://spes.vt.edu/) at Virginia Tech. The position is located at the Eastern Shore Agricultural Research and Extension Center (ESAREC; http://www.arec.vaes.vt.edu/eastern-shore/index.html) in Virginia’s largest crop production region on the Virginia portion of the Delmarva Peninsula between the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. Vegetable, grain, fiber, and oilseed crops of importance in Virginia include potato, tomato, snap bean, cucumber, summer squash, sweet corn, pepper, broccoli, pumpkin, watermelon, wheat, corn, soybean, cotton, and peanut, among others.

Responsibilities include the development of innovative, nationally-recognized research and extension programs focused on designing and evaluating environmentally appropriate weed management techniques. Research should be applicable to the producers’ needs and publishable in refereed journals. Responsibilities also include monitoring for herbicide-resistant weeds and working with other weed scientists to suppress resistance spread. The incumbent is expected to disseminate research results and recommendations to stakeholders within the Commonwealth of Virginia utilizing innovative Extension channels. The scientist is expected to secure extramural funding to support research and Extension programs and recruit, support, and mentor graduate students. The successful candidate will work cooperatively with other extension specialists and agents, researchers, growers, industry groups, and other stakeholders. Collaborations with campus faculty and those located at other Agricultural Research and Extension Centers (ARECs) are expected. The position aligns with Virginia Tech’s Global Systems Science Destination Area as well as with the SmartFarm Innovation Network Initiative, which aims at developing a decentralized network of interconnected centers across the Commonwealth where Virginia Tech’s interdisciplinary researchers and Virginia Cooperative Extension specialists can partner with industries to develop and deploy innovative technologies to increase overall efficiency, resilience, and sustainability of food, agricultural, and natural resources production systems.

Qualifications sought

Ph.D. in Weed Science or closely related field; An understanding of agricultural production systems; Effective communication skills; Evidence of strong communication skills and teamwork; Demonstrable ability to pursue and secure external grant funding; Capacity for effective instruction and mentoring of graduate students; Record of peer reviewed publications; Demonstrable experience with field crop management and practices used in a research/production setting.
