Description of Employer The South Florida Water Management District is a regional governmental agency that manages the water resources in the southern half of the state, covering 16 counties from Orlando to the Florida Keys and serving a population of 8.1 million residents. It is the oldest and largest of the state’s five water management districts. Created in 1949, the agency is responsible for managing and protecting water resources of South Florida by balancing and improving flood control, water supply, water quality and natural systems.

A key initiative is restoration of the Everglades – the largest environmental restoration project in the nation’s history. The District is also working to improve the Kissimmee River and its floodplain, Lake Okeechobee and South Florida’s coastal estuaries.

Description of duties

This practitioner level land management position is responsible for performing land management functions administered by the Land Stewardship Section and performs a variety of duties to assure District-owned lands are properly managed for recreational and ecological purposes. 

This position is responsible for performing land management activities including the planning and monitoring of exotic plant control contracts, installing prescribe burn lines and planning and participating in prescribe burns to improve plant diversity and habitat conditions, and preparing Statements of Work for various contracted activities including habitat restoration projects, maintenance activities, debris removal, and mechanical vegetations control. 

Additional responsibilities include supervising contractors, posting regulatory and rule signage for site security and public use purposes, conducting gate and fence repairs, conducting exotic plant and mechanical vegetation control activities, performing semi-annual site inspections for resource protection purposes, and addressing unauthorized activities such as illegal dumping or encroachment issues.  Incumbent shall have the ability to operate field equipment including swamp buggies, farm tractors and implements, and all-terrain vehicles to complete assigned field activities.

Incumbent shall possess strong organizational and written and oral communication skills and the ability to work productively in a group setting with co-workers and outside agencies.   Assignments for developmental purposes may include some work that is typical of a higher level land management position.

Qualifications sought

Typically has an Associate’s Degree in biology, ecology, wildlife, or a related natural science discipline and 4+ years of related experience that demonstrates measurable career progression within the field of natural resource management.

Possession or ability to acquire within 180 days from date of hire State of Florida pesticide applicators liclense and State of Florida prescribed burners certificate.
