Description of duties
  • The primary responsibility of the Research Assistant is to oversee a research project investigating the role irrigation water may play in the spread of weed seeds in container nurseries, and strategies to mitigate weed seed dispersal.
  • Major duties for project will include year-round maintenance of on-farm research including but not limited to: installation and monitoring irrigation filtration systems, Installation and testing of screens for capturing weed seeds in nursery irrigation systems, collecting filter samples, conducting bioassays for weeds in filtrates, identification of weeds in nurseries and water filtrates, data input, data analysis, reporting research results. 
  • Secondary responsibilities will include assisting other project staff with nursery crop weed control experiments including (but not limited to) potting and maintaining plants, herbicide applications, data recording, data input and analysis, pesticide and supply inventories.
  • Some supervision of temporary seasonal workers will be required.
  • Coordinate and communicate with other project staff and students to ensure completion of experiments and quality outputs.
Qualifications sought
  • Master of Science in a related field or Bachelor of Science degree in Horticulture, Agronomy, or related field with 3 years of relevant experience.
  • Research experience
  • A demonstrated understanding of research methods including experimental design, analysis and reporting.
  • Good communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Valid NC driver’s license
  • Ability to obtain a NC Pesticide applicator’s license within 90 days of employment
  • Job will require frequent in-state travel to test sites, occasional late hours and overnight trips.
  • Proficient in common computer software, specifically MSOffice.
  • Must be physically able and willing to work outdoors, sometimes in inclement weather; use common hand-tools; and lift plants and equipment weighing up to 50 lbs. Also, must have visual acuity to differentiate and identify weed seedlings.
  • Must be capable of doing all the described activities with a minimum of supervision.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master of Science in Horticulture, Weed Science or related field, or Bachelor of Science with equivalent field research experience.
  • Experience with container nursery crop production and irrigation system maintenance are desirable.
  • Applicant should be comfortable communicating with a diverse group of people.
