Description of duties
This paid position offers the successful candidate an opportunity to learn about and assist with cutting-edge research and education programs focused on production agriculture, integrated pest management, water use efficiency, and innovative practices to minimize environmental impacts while ensuring economic viability of tree crop production. The Junior Specialist will participate in educational and outreach efforts to educate farmers, pest control professionals, and the general public regarding scientific findings and improved methodologies of crop production and environmental protection. Working closely with experienced UC Cooperative Extension Advisors, the Junior Specialist will learn about the latest in agricultural practices and technologies pertaining to almonds, walnuts, and other perennial crops. The successful candidate will interact with the individuals and organizations (public and private) that support California agriculture. This is a unique professional development opportunity. 
Position: Pomology Junior Specialist with the University of California Cooperative Extension
  • 12 Month: Junior Specialist, fulltime position (40 hours per week) at a monthly rate of $3291. Eligible to receive and accrue University benefits. First date of work anticipated to be May/June 2019.
Where: The position will be located at the UCCE Stanislaus County office in Modesto, and work in the North San Joaquin Valley tree crop region.  
Qualifications sought
A baccalaureate degree in agricultural sciences (soils, entomology, plant pathology, agronomy, horticulture, plant sciences, or related field) is required. The candidate must demonstrate the ability to conduct field research, work independently, as well as accomplish team-based research and education programs consistent with the UCCE’s mission.
Furthermore, experience must demonstrate:
·        The ability to communicate and extend technical information in an understandable manner;
·        The ability to work with people who may have a diversity of views and values;
·        The ability and willingness to perform physical work outdoors in adverse weather conditions (warm or cold) when dust or mud is present;
·        Literacy in modern computing technologies, including but not limited to statistical software packages (e.g. Statgraphisc), Microsoft Office Suite, and internet communications.
