Type of position This position is a full-time, time-limited, regular position in the Weed Science Research program located at the Delta Research and Extension Center, Stoneville, MS. Funds are available for one year with the possibility of renewal.

Description of duties

Management of complex research protocols and data sets. The researcher will be required to provide updated plot-plans to cooperating scientists and ensure that proper protocol is followed. The researcher will also be responsile for collecting data from cooperating scientist and ensuring the data is accurate.

Data analysis. The researcher will be responsible for data management and data analysis of all collected field data. These measurements include grain/seed yield, plant biomass, and production economics. The researcher will need to be familiar with statistical programs such as JMP and SAS.

Data presentation and research reporting. Summarized and anlyzed data will need to be presented to stakeholders such as state and national commodity boards and cooperators. The researcher will be required to condense complex data into presentations appropriate for lay audiences. The researcher must be familar with presentation programs such as Excel, PowerPoint, and Sigma Plot. The researcher will also be responsible for generating appropriate data summaries for various offical reports.

Manuscript preparation. The researcher will be responsible for preparation of manuscripts from the collected data. The researcher will be responsible for all aspects of manuscript preparation and revison in international peer reviewed journals such as Weed Science Journal, Weed Research, Agronomy, Crop Science, and Field Crops Research. 

Qualifications sought

Minimum Qualifications

Ph.D. in Agronomy or related area of Plant and/or Weed Science with a minimum of three years experience in agricultural research or the equivalent is required. Experience in pest management is desirable. The individual must have a valid driver’s license. Training in EPA Worker Protection Standards is required. The individual must be capable of carrying out assigned research duties following supervisor’s instructions. Physical strength and endurance are needed to perform strenuous outdoor work under field conditions suitable for cotton, wheat, corn, grain sorghum, and peanut production.

The individual must be competent in written and oral communcation. Demonstrated publication record is essential. Competency in computer software such as Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Agriculture Research Manager (ARM), Sigma Plot, JMP, and Statistical Analysis System (SAS) is necessary.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience developing grants. Experience working with cooperators across a wide geographic area. Demonstrated statistical analytical skills. The individual must have at least 3 to 4 years of experience in the field of weed science. Experience in small plot research with multiple crops is desirable. Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment, and previous supervision of part time employees is desirable.
