Location Powell Research and Extension Center, Powell, WY/ Laramie, WY
Description of Location The Powell Research and Extension Center (PREC) is one mile north of Powell, WY on Highway 295 at an elevation of 4,374 feet. One hundred seventy-five of the 220 acres at the PREC are irrigated cropland. Research focuses include weed management, irrigation, cropping systems, high tunnel production, variety performance testing, and alternative crops. Salary $22,380/yr, tuition and fees are waived, and individual health insurance is paid according to the UW policy

Description of duties The graduate student research will focus on the integrated management of problem weeds in agronomic crops in Wyoming. The student will have the opportunity to conduct field and greenhouse based research in multiple locations in Wyoming. Students will also study the basic biology, ecology and seedbank management of weed species in a cropping system. Additionally, the student will be involved with the University of Wyoming’s Extension programs, farm visits, and the development of the extension materials.

The student is expected to publish research findings in peer-reviewed journals and participate in scholarly activities, and will also be supported to attend the professional meetings. Upon successful completion, the student will receive a Ph.D. degree in Agronomy or Plant Science.

Qualifications sought
  • M.S. degree in Agronomy, Weed Science, Agroecology, Plant Science or another relevant field
  • Good understanding of agronomic crop production system is required
  • A desire to learn statistical techniques and modeling
  • An excellent work ethic and ability to work as a part of a multi-disciplinary and a multi-cultural team
  • Strong written and oral communication skills are required
