Description of duties The University of Maryland is seeking a motivated and skilled weed-ecologist with interests in organic research, extension and undergraduate training to join the sustainable agriculture and applied ecology group. Research opportunities will include studying impacts of biosolarization and cover cropping on weeds, arthropods and soil health in organic vegetable systems. Extension activities will consist of producing newsletter articles on weed management, presentation of research activities at local field day and walking tour events as well as local and regional commodity meetings. Contribution to a multi-institutional undergraduate training program will include maintaining and uploading information related to integrated pest management (IPM) on an interactive teaching website as well as coordinating online training activities and interactions among undergraduate participants.

The Post-doctoral Research Associate (Post-doc) will design, establish and maintain field experiments; develop sampling protocols for experiments; supervise student interns; communicate with collaborators and research facility personnel to coordinate research activities; analyze data from new and past experiments; drafts manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals; prepare applied research summary for grant progress; present research results at local, regional and national meetings and conferences. A valid driver license is required.

Post-docs in our group have an opportunity to participate in the composition of grants and serve as PI on grants that they take the lead on and co-PI on others. There will be opportunities for teaching and mentoring students, and other activities for professional development. Qualifications sought Essential qualifications include (1) PhD in weed science, horticulture or related discipline; (2) willingness to conduct multi-disciplinary research; (3) record of peer-reviewed publications; (4) experience with weed management in field or vegetable cropping systems; (5) strong interpersonal and public speaking communication skills; and strong experience in
statistical analyses. Desired qualifications include knowledge of IPM as well as organic and/or sustainable farming systems, and experience in the establishment and maintenance of field experiments. The ideal candidate will have the desire to conduct original research, addressing applied and basic questions related to ecological weed management in low input cropping systems. Strong communication skills are essential.
