Description of duties

Primary Position Function

Conduct independent field and greenhouse research in Weed Science

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Design field research experiments, layout plots, apply herbicides and other treatments, evaluate weed and crop response, and analyze data
  • Implement greenhouse screening experiments for determination of evolved herbicide resistance, including maintaining weed seed stocks and collection records
  • Interact with growers, industry representatives, and research associates, with opportunities for extension-related activities
  • Provide training for new students in field and greenhouse research procedures
  • Supervise undergraduate and extra-help employees with instruction on data collection and field plot maintenance
  • Maintain pesticide and seed inventory logs
  • Conduct field tours for research sponsors
  • Collect propagules from putative herbicide-resistant weed populations for propagation under controlled greenhouse conditions
Qualifications sought

Education

Required: B.S. degree in Crop Sciences or related discipline

Preferred: M.S. degree in Weed Science or related discipline

Experience

Required: Experience with computers for word processing, experience with spreadsheet software, and data management is required.  Two years of field research experience is required.  Experience with greenhouse research equipment and experiment designs is required.

Preferred: Supervisory experience

Training, Licenses or Certifications

Required: Possession of, or ability to obtain, an Illinois Public/Research Pesticide Applicator’s License

Preferred: Possession of, or ability to obtain, an Illinois Commercial Driver’s License

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Thorough knowledge of weed science principles, ability to accurately identify weed species.  Excellent interpersonal communication skills and ability to speak in public.
