Description of duties

The Department of Horticulture and Landscape Architecture at Purdue University is seeking a qualified and highly motivated individual interested in obtaining a M.S. or Ph.D. degree in Horticulture Crops Weed Science. The successful applicant will have the opportunity to conduct applied field, greenhouse, and laboratory research in vegetable production systems. Research will focus on integrated weed management techniques including chemical, mechanical, and cultural control measures.  The successful applicant will present research results to peers and stakeholders at scientific and grower meetings.  The student will collaborate with scientists, graduate students, and undergraduate students in the Department of Horticulture and Landscape Architecture and across other university departments to gain broader experiences in agriculture research and develop essential soft skills including collegiality, teamwork, and leadership.  This opportunity is suited for anyone wanting an advanced degree in horticulture or weed science.  The assistantship will equip students for a career in academia, Extension, or industry.

Qualifications sought

A B.S. or M.S. degree with a major emphasis in Weed Science, Horticulture, Agronomy, Plant Sciences, or closely related field is required. Experience and/or knowledge of field plot techniques, experimental design and familiarity with vegetable crop management or weed science is a plus. Strong written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills are essential.
