Description of Location The Hettinger Research Extension Center (HREC) is one of seven out-state NDSU research extension centers. The HREC is located in Hettinger, ND, a city of approximately 1,200 located in the rolling plains of southwest North Dakota. The HREC conducts research in the fields of animal science (cattle and sheep), wildlife and range science, agronomy, and weed science. Hettinger is home to West River Health Services – a leader in rural health care in the US, excellent educational, and community facilities, and internationally recognized hunting and recreational opportunities. Description of duties

The Hettinger Research Extension Center (HREC) is seeking a Manager of Agriculture Operations. This position will manage a 100 head cow herd, 1,000 ewe flock, and grow/procure all of the feed for their support. Additionally, this position will manage two permanent employees and summer technicians. Research support will be provided to the scientists at the HREC, as well as collaborating scientists. The responsibilities will include but not be limited to: managing technicians, monitoring and maintaining equipment, monitoring feed inventories, managing feed production systems, seeding, planting, and harvesting both annual and perennial forages and small grains, maintaining State Fleet vehicles, using computers and hand-held data collection devices, following research protocols, calving and lambing, maintaining herd health and reproduction protocols, and operating a safe unit. Farming activities will require operation and maintenance of farm scale machinery including tractors, planters, combines, sprayers, etc. Many duties will require working in outdoor environment with varying environmental conditions and will occasionally require lifting of bags or containers of seed, fertilizer, chemicals, etc. Assistance in the supervision undergraduate, temporary and seasonal staff will be necessary. Duties will require occasional travel to off station research locations. The manager must be able to carry out these and other duties as assigned with general and minimal guidance from the HREC Director.

Qualifications sought

Minimum Qualifications

? B.S. degree in crop science, agronomy, plant science, animal science, weed science, agriculture, or related field, or 5 years relevant experience.

? Experience with crop and/or forage production.

? Experience calving and/or lambing.

? Ability to operate field equipment.

? Demonstrated computer skills and ability to work with Microsoft Word and Excel.

? Effective written and verbal communication skills.

? Valid Driver’s License.

? Hold or be able to obtain a North Dakota Commercial Pesticide Applicator’s License within 6 month of hire.

? Hold or be able to hold a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) within 6 months of hire.

Preferred Qualifications

? M.S. degree in crop science, agronomy, plant science, animal science, weed science, or related field or 3 years management experience in farm operations.

? Repair of farm equipment such as tractors, planters, combines and sprayers.

? Experience applying agricultural pesticides and related crop input applications.

? Verified experience in the repair and maintenance of farm equipment.
