The Weed Science program at the Eastern Shore AREC is focused on fostering Virginia agriculture by developing innovative and sustainable weed management solutions for row crops and vegetables. Description of Location Student will complete courses at Blacksburg campus and research will be at multi-locations (VT Blacksburg, and Eastern Shore AREC, Painter, VA)
Salary Competitive assistantship
Benefits A competitive assistantship salary for three years, all tuitions and fees wil be paid by the program, and individual health insurance will be provided.

Description of duties Weed Science program at Eastern Shore AREC is looking for a PhD student in the area of precision agriculture/ remote sensing. Research focus will be on the development and application of advanced technologies (e.g. Unmanned Aerial Vehicles/ sensor-based ground vehicles/ field robots), analytics and tools for field-level decision-making, precise application of inputs for crop and weed management and/or optimized, real-time agronomic management. Research will involve laboratory, greenhouse, and field experiments. Student will have the opportunity to work with the collaborators at the United States Department of Agriculture, University of Delaware, GROW network, and with many other engineering faculties working under https://www.cals.vt.edu/research/innovation-smartfarm.html Smart Farming initiative of Virginia Tech.
Qualifications sought MS in agriculture science/ remote sensing/ computer science or related field. The candidate must have some training in agriculture sciences and strong interest to work in multi-disciplinary teams. Candidates with knowledge of programming, image analysis, machine learning, geospatial statistics/ modeling will be preferred. This PhD position will be open for fall 2020, contingent upon fulfillment of all admission requirements at Virginia Tech.
