Description of duties We are seeking an outstanding, self-motivated MS or PhD student with interest in weed science within the Agronomy Department at Agricultural Research Center in Hays. Student will perform field, greenhouse, and lab research on understanding the geographical distribution of herbicide-resistant weeds in western Kansas and evaluation of integrated weed management (IWM) tactics, including cover crops, chaff lining, and cultural practices on the soil seedbanks and population dynamics of herbicide-resistant weed species in prominent crop rotations across multiple locations in western Kansas (Hays, Great Bend, Garden City). Research projects will be under the directions of Dr. Vipan Kumar (KSU Agricultural Research Center in Hays, KS, https://www.hays.k-state.edu/programs/weeds/index.html and Dr. Anita Dille (Department of Agronomy, Manhattan, KS, https://www.agronomy.k-state.edu/). The selected candidate will also have the opportunity to teach lab sections of weed science courses in the Agronomy department.
Qualifications sought Candidates should have:

  • BS degree (3.5 GPA minimum) in agronomy, crop science or a closely related discipline
  • Experience in field and greenhouse research, and ability to use Microsoft office software to manage, summarize and produce summary statistics on research data
  • Demonstrated excellence in course work, good written and oral communication skills, and the ability to work as a team member with other graduate students, professional staff, and faculty members
  • Ability and willingness to travel and work in inclement weather conditions during the cropping season
