Description of duties

We are looking for a Process and Formulations Specialist who will join our Lawns team in Marysville, Ohio.

This position will be based at The Scotts Miracle-Gro world headquarters in Marysville, a suburb of Columbus, OH. Not familiar with Columbus? Visit columbusregion.com/columbus-2020/

The Specialist will support the process and formulations requirements of projects to drive a diverse portfolio for our Lawns business segment which focuses on bringing best in category lawn care products to market. These products include lawn food, weed & feed, weed control and soil improving products, including both the conventional and the organic/natural options.

The Specialist works with the process and formulation development team to conduct pilot trials, bench scale qualifications and testing formulation prototypes. Detailed tasks will include preparing for and conducting experiments/trials, data collection, analysis and reporting of data. The Specialist must be comfortable with bulk solid and liquid chemical processing at lab bench through pilot plant scales.

What you’ll do in this role:
* Support pilot plant scale trials of new processes and new products consistent with business unit goals.
* Optimizes and executes experimental plans to obtain data for process design and product specifications.
* Prepares and tests samples of developmental and commercial formulations.
* Records laboratory information from preparations and tests.
* Laboratory chemical inventory, shipping chemicals, manage waste, and prepares and submits samples to the analytical lab for analysis.
* Maintain lab areas and associated equipment.
* Set up and manage experiments according to trial protocols provided; Record experimental results and report them as directed.
* Maintain working areas in a safe and efficient manner (ex: ensure safety/laboratory supplies are stocked, equipment and glassware is cleaned and stored, storage areas are maintained)
* Maintain and obtain stocks of experimental materials and competitor products in a safe and efficient manner.
* Occasionally take part in weekend duty rotations as required and provide holiday and sick day cover for colleagues.
* Site maintenance as required, directing temporary workers as needed.
* Gather quantitative data on formulations such as pH, particle size, contact angle, viscosity, bulk density/specific gravity, etc.
* Assist Formulator with batching larger quantity formulations for scale-up and stability testing.
* Assist formulator in set up and management of formula stability, record experimental results and report them as directed.
* Assists with plant trials of new processes and new products.
* Assists Operations and Contract Manufacturing with implementation of new or revised processes and formulations.
* Conducts all project tasks in compliance with corporate Environmental, Health, and Safety principles.

What you’ll need to be successful:
* Experience in a pilot plant and/or laboratory experience.
* AS or BS degree in chemistry or engineering.
* 2 -5 years of experience with industrial equipment.
* Experience in bulk solids chemical handling and processing.
* Familiarity with laboratory scale, pilot scale, and production processing equipment.
* History of team oriented problem solving.
* Strong hands-on mechanical ability.
* Ability to use current PC-based software (e.g., Microsoft Windows, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Google G-Suite, etc.)
* Attention to detail, accuracy and basic math skills.
* Observational skills to identify visual differences in plant performance and formulation stability.
* Ability to follow work instructions and test protocols.
* Personal drive and ability to be a self-starter and work unsupervised.
* Ability to lift 50lb required.
* Ability to operate equipment such as forklift, utility carts, sprayers, spreaders and other typical equipment used to maintain lawns and greenhouses
* Demonstrated interpersonal skills and teamwork.
* Strong time-management skills.
* Ability to work in a fast-paced work environment.
* Flexibility to change priorities and/or manage multiple priorities.
