Description of duties The Agricultural Biologist is a member of the Biology team within BASF's North American Agricultural Products business. This position is critical for characterizing the biological profile of new herbicide development candidates and optimizing the performance of these candidates as well as commercial herbicide innovations. Results from the optimization research performed in RTP are used to focus our field program on the development concepts / treatments that have the best chance of success.

The Biologist also conducts many special studies to quickly answer questions that arise during herbicide project justification, development or commercialization.

The Agricultural Biologist serves as a biological technical liaison on cross functional teams for assigned herbicide projects. He/She effectively coordinates research and development activities for BASF herbicide-related technologies with several different business partners including their Biology group leader, Biology project leader peers, and colleagues from regional and global R&D, regulatory, as well as sales, marketing and other functional units.

Additional responsibilities include:
  • Design and implementation of experimental programs to support discovery, selection, development and optimization of new herbicide candidates / technologies.
  • Provide science-based technical support for current commercial products.
  • Perform and coordinate special greenhouse/lab/field studies to support herbicide development.
  • Characterize biological properties of experimental herbicides and identify new uses for existing products.
  • Effectively communicate results and recommendations with R&D and Business partners.
Typical activities for this position include:
  • New formulation phyto and weed screening
  • Adjuvant, safener, rate and timing optimization
  • Spray solution volume and pH performance effects
  • Quantitative and biological assessment of leaching and residual weed control for soil applied herbicide candidates
  • Application uptake / rainfastness evaluation - New herbicide concept, technology and mixture screening
  • Weed resistance confirmation
  • Data generation for patent support
Qualifications sought Required:
  • MS or PhD in related Agricultural Biological or Plant Protection disciplines such as Agronomy / Crop Science / Horticulture, Plant Physiology, Plant Protection or Weed Science. BASF recognizes Institutions of Higher Education which are accredited by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation or equivalent.
  • Additional closely-related experience of at least 2 years is required with an appropriate PhD or 4 years with an MS degree.
  • Thorough knowledge of crop protection field research processes and techniques.
  • Thorough knowledge of agronomic / plant production and protection practices.
  • Working knowledge of plant physiology from a Weed Science perspective (herbicide / plant interaction).
  • Practical knowledge of computers and software necessary for communication, data collection/analysis and knowledge sharing.
Preferred:
  • Crop protection experience.
