Description of duties Role Purpose -

The Agronomy Planting Research Associate will coordinate and execute Nursery and Trait planting and transplanting operations and provide guidance for the execution of Parent Seed plantings in a highly team-oriented environment.

Accountabilities –

  • Maintain planting calendar, lead planting planning meetings, coordinate with project RAs to ensure effective and efficient execution of all planting activities.
  • Participate in land allocation decision making
  • Ensure compliance with all regulatory and stewardship requirements.
  • Supervise and train staff to complete planting activties. Oversee tasks completed by third-party contract labor to ensure business objectives are achieved.
  • Manage field measurement and marking procedures and verify that all plantings are isolated according to regulatory compliance and stewardship requirements. GPS fields using Trimble, submit GPS coordinates for regulated plantings. Utilize ArcGIS and GPS software for electronic documentation/record archiving of field maps and related information and maintain separate measurement file.
  • Work closely with the maintenance to ensure that all planting equipment is operated and maintained in a way that will maximize efficiency, longevity and error-free operation, including maintaining records and ensuring regular scheduled servicing.
  • Manage timely and error-free crop destruct operations to initiate the volunteer process.
  • Maintain restricted use pesticide records, bird chasing/planting calendar schedule.
  • Assist with drip/irrigation supply ordering as needed and support for tillage operations when needed
Qualifications sought Critical Knowledge
  • B.S. in agriculture or equivalent experience in tropical agricultural research preferred.
  • Thorough working knowledge of drip and overhead-irrigated row crop production practices.
  • Good understanding of cultural practices (weed control, soil fertility practices, etc.).
  • Excellent knowledge of operation, repair, maintenance, calibration and troubleshooting of cone, precision, finger pickup, and transplanting planting equipment and systems.
  • Effective working knowledge of survey and measuring equipment (GPS, range finders).
  • Knowledge of and ability to use computer hardware and software for data management and communication, planting allocation. E.g., ArcInfo (GIS), Excel, Access.
  • Thorough knowledge of the maize breeding processes and nursery management practices and requirements.
  • Knowledge of seed crop research, production and quality assurance practices.
Critical Experience
  • Ability to maintain/obtain a Commercial Drivers and Pesticide Applicators License.
  • Ability to establish priorities and oversee multiple research activities simultaneously at peak work periods.
  • Excellent leadership, team building and interpersonal skills, especially those required to successfully function as part of a cross-functional team.
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, planning and problem solving skills.
  • Ability to understand, communicate, oversee, and execute complex work instructions.
