| Description of duties |
Role Purpose –
The Insect Pest Management (IPM) Agronomy Research Associate will support the Operations Manager in the technical aspects of the agronomy program; scouting and interpretation of scouting data to develop appropriate prescriptions, evaluation of the efficacy from current inputs and procedures, and assistance with applied field research to evaluate new products and practices.
Accountabilities –
- Development and implement appropriate scouting, documentation and recommended actions based on acquired information.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of current practices and products, via scouting and data collection.
- Assist with the development and execution of applied field research trials to investigate efficacy and safety of new practices, products, techniques and technologies in the areas of IPM.
- Execute Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) developed by Site Management Team. Aid in SOP implementation by IPM personnel. Assist with coordination and execution of agronomy group operations activities and SOP implementation.
- Regular updates and written progress reports, timelines and needs communicated as requested by managers.

| Qualifications sought |
Critical Knowledge
- B.S. in agriculture or equivalent experience in tropical agricultural research preferred.
- Knowledge of farm operations and agronomy necessary.
- Good understanding of cultural practices (weed control, soil fertility practices, etc.), field scouting methodology, field diagnoses and troubleshooting, for pests, fertility, irrigation problems, etc.
- Knowledge of and ability to use computer hardware and software for data management, trial setup and analysis. E.g., ArcInfo, Excel, Access.
- General understanding of field and plot machinery utilization.
- Thorough knowledge of the maize breeding processes and nursery management practices and requirements. Exposure to marker-assisted breeding.
- Knowledge of seed crop research, production and quality assurance practices.
Critical Experience
- Ability to maintain/obtain a Commercial Applicator’s License.
- The successful candidate will also demonstrate strong organizational, interpersonal and communication skills. Strong computer skills are helpful. The ability to function effectively as a team member and to perform detailed work is necessary. The ideal candidate will also be flexible, adaptable and safety-oriented.
- Ability to establish priorities and oversee multiple research activities simultaneously at peak work periods.
- Excellent leadership, team building and interpersonal skills, especially those required to successfully function as part of a cross-functional team.
- Excellent analytical, organizational, planning and problem solving skills.
- Ability to understand, communicate, supervise, and execute complex instructions.

- Frequent travel to seed research and production sites on Kauai.

- Outdoor – extensive field work and supervision of technical field staff.
