Description of Location Western Triangle Agricultural Research Center (WTARC) is one of the seven research centers, distributed across Montana, in the Department of Research Centers under the College of Agriculture/Montana Agricultural Experiment Station. WTARC is situated in the vast agricultural production area known as Montana’s ‘Golden Triangle Area’. The western half of this area, the center’s main focus area, grows about 27% of the state’s cereal grain production. Information from the research is made available to farmers via popular press, bulletins, printed and website research reports, public seminars and field days. The center is staffed with one faculty member, one research associate, one technician, and one administrative assistant.

Description of duties This research associate position is under the supervision of the WTARC soil nutrient management/soil fertility specialist focusing on precision agriculture and the use of sensor-based technologies.

This individual will coordinate applied, field-oriented multi-location soil nutrient management research in cereals and on-farm trials across Montana.

The successful candidate will participate in the design and establishment of field studies, organize and implement field trials according to experimental protocols.

Specific duties include tillage, seed treatment, planting, herbicide application, harvesting, data collection and analysis, and summarization of research results.

The successful candidate is expected to present research results at producer and commodity association meetings and to contribute to the publication of results in both scientific journal and popular press articles.

Additional duties include maintenance of field equipment, laboratory facili ties, field study areas, and supervision of temporary or seasonal laborers.

The successful candidate must be able to work with a wide variety of constituents, be self-motivated, and be able to work without close supervision.

Qualifications sought Required Qualifications:

  1. M.S. degree in Agronomy, Soil Science, or closely related field.
  2. Knowledge of soils, nutrient cycling, fertilizer and integrated production strategies.
  3. Experience in agronomic field plot technology.
  4. Possess a valid driver’s license.
  5. Possess or be able to obtain a government pesticide applicators license.

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Experience in sensor-based technologies, precision agriculture.
  2. Experience in manuscript and grant proposal writing.
  3. Experience with analytical equipment and/or techniques associated with soil and plant material analysis.
  4. Ability to operate research plot and field-scale tillage, planting and harvest equipment, including research plot combine.
  5. Experience in the use of computer software for word processing, generating labels, spreadsheet and statistical analysis.
