Description of duties This position will assist Extension weed science faculty, the Extension Weed Science Outreach Program Manager, and Graduate Research Assistants by performing many tasks to help with the overall research management and outreach material development of several on-going research projects. Incumbent will conduct research in the area of corn, soybean, and small grain cropping system weed management. Research areas will include herbicide resistance, nutrient and crop growth by weed management interactions, and assisting with herbicide evaluation. Specific tasks will include:

  1. Prepare research plans utilizing proper experimental designs for various field and greenhouse weed management research projects. 50%
  2. Assist and supervise graduate students on various aspects of research projects 10%
  3. Make decisions regarding work schedules by utilizing information from several sources such as co-workers, scientific literature, and weather conditions. 10%
  4. Work with PI in the preparation of extramural research proposals, research manuscripts, and Extension publications by aiding in literature searches, maintaining literature citation management software and formatting documents to match certain specifications. 20%
  5. Work with the PI and the program outreach manager to develop standard operating procedures (SOP) for the Herbicide Evaluation Program and other on-going field and greenhouse research projects. 10%

Additional Information:

Applicant must be willing to work flexible hours upon occasions, including weekends. Must be able to be approved by UW Madison Office of Risk Management to operate ARS tractors, vehicles, and other powered equipment. A farm background and experience in cropping agriculture is highly desirable.

Qualifications sought Minimum of two years relevant, professional work experience. 3-5 years for no-prefix level, 6+ to qualify for senior level.

  • Applicant must be competent and comfortable in the use of computer spreadsheets, databases, word processing, statistical analysis software and electronic communications.
  • Must have strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to read and interpret scientific literature on weed management research.
  • Ability to obtain a WI Certified Pesticide applicator license in categories appropriate to the job responsibilities.
  • Applicant should be competent and comfortable in the use of planting equipment, sprayers and plot combines with their associated electronics.
  • Applicant must also be familiar with plant growth and propagation techniques to conduct greenhouse research.
  • Other specific research skills including the use of laboratory instruments for conducting research on nutrient by weed management interactions, or knowledge of normalized digital vegetative index instruments in the field would be a plus.
