Assistant Extension/Research Professor with Mississippi State University- North Mississippi Research and Extension Center in Verona, Mississippi

Type of position This is a 12-month non-tenure track appointment (75% research/25% Extension) with the North Mississippi Research and Extension Center (NMREC) in the Horticulture Unit, Verona, MS with an academic home in the Department of Plant and Soil Sciences on the main MSU campus.Candidates are sought to provide agressive leadership in the development and implementation of a nationally recognized Research and Extension program addressing Mississippi’s vegetable and small fruit industry. The objective is to provide producers, professional farm managers, agribusiness professionals, and others with objective, research-based information on vegetable and small fruit production.

Description of Location The NMREC is one of four Research and Extension Centers in the MSU System. The Horticulture Unit is located in Verona, MS approximately 50 minutes from the main MSU campus in Starkville, MS. The NMREC is one of the largest of MSU’s 16 branch experiment stations and research units located throughout the state, having a staff of approximately 50 employees, and consisting of approximately 4,500 acres.

Description of duties JOB DESCRIPTION:
The successful candidate will develop applied research programs related to new and existing production practices and systems and will be expected to conduct research, publish results, and maintain regional and national visibility in the academic profession. They will be expected to collaborate with other faculty at the North Mississippi Research and Extension Center and with research specialists from other locations and disciplines, as appropriate, to develop an effective research program.The successful candidate will also be involved in Extension programs in vegetable and small fruit production in North Mississippi that will include a number of Extension activities and materials. These materials and activities may include offering workshops and other educational presentations, Extension publications, content for mass media, departmental and college newsletter articles, popular press publications, and county-level programs.

The successful candidate will be expected to actively engage with research faculty and extension specialists at the North Mississippi Research and Extension Center and from other locations and disciplines, especially those working in horticultural Research and Extension. Opportunities for participation in undergraduate and/or graduate student education exist.

Qualifications sought
  • A Ph.D. in Horticulture or a closely related discipline.
  • The successful candidate will have a practical knowledge of agriculture, enabling her/him to work with public and private entities and agricultural producers in Mississippi to develop system solutions to practical vegetable and small fruit production issues.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and verbal and written communication skills are required for the position.
  • Experience with Extension education is desirable, but not required.

Candidates with a minimum of five years research and/or Extension experience in horticulture with knowledge and/or fruit will be preferred.
