Description of duties JOB DESCRIPTION:

BASF’s Agricultural Strategic Marketing group is seeking a Global Product Development Manager that will be responsible for leadership and coordination of a pipeline of research and development for Herbicide Tolerance (HT) trait assets, up to and including support of commercial launch. This pipeline underpins a high potential business and is responsible for ensuring timely and efficient delivery of new HT technology for sustainable and profitability growth of the HT business.

The successful candidate will lead cross-regional/functional teams and will integrate inputs from Regional Marketing, Regulatory, R&D, and Controlling colleagues across various cultures and countries globally to successfully launch and grow HT assets.

Specifically, the Global Product Development Manager will:

  • Organize and lead global cross-functional teams, service providers and/or seed partners to initiate, develop, implement and achieve project objectives, representing the project to management and internal units
  • Represents BASF in third-party collaborations (negotiations/cross-company collaboration teams) with senior management and the investor community
  • Be responsible for ensuring the successful global launch of developed HT traits.

Specific duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Responsible for driving the identification of next generation HT non-GM and GM traits that will serve a market 10+years in the future and find creative ways to bring these technologies to market over a 12-15 yr R&D cycle.
  • Management of strategic and short-term planning for several HT traits across a global, multi-crop, multi-market environment. Tasks range from market strategic planning, long term asset management (markets trends, technology needs, competitor/partner benchmarking, IP, product portfolio, budget planning, partnering) to short term (resource allocation, project planning, annual budgeting).
  • Leadership of the core project team and representation on partner collaboration teams.
  • Drive the process of developing the specific elements of the HT project strategy and compilation of these into the overall project strategy. Represents and negotiates strategy with collaborators.
  • Communication linkage for the project to executive management internally and externally.
  • Lead strategic assessment and procurement of new 3rd party technologies.
  • Coordinating with appropriate contacts in global and regional marketing, regulatory, manufacturing, legal, supply chain and controlling in order to harmonize with the Crop Protection division strategy.

Travel: 25% including international travel

Qualifications sought Qualifications


  • PhD in agriculture, biology, weed science or related field with 10 years demonstrated leadership in field.
  • Broad knowledge of the technology involved in HT, and the interaction of crop germplasm/genetics with the development and introduction of HT traits

. Preferred:

  • Demonstrated ability in Project Management either through a minimum of 3 years experience in complex global projects, or professional accreditation.
  • Basic understanding of seed industry, including key seed companies for managing partnerships.
  • Demonstrated experience in the field of strategic marketing for traits and/or seeds.
