Description of Employer The College of Agriculture and Natural Resources at the University of Wyoming is searching to fill the position of Professor and Head of the Department of Plant Sciences.

The Department of Plant Sciences is known for excellent research, teaching and extension programs that attract nearly a million dollars annually in funding. The department offers Masters and PhD degrees in Plant Sciences and jointly administers an undergraduate degree in Agroecology. Extensive field and animal resources at the Wyoming Agricultural Experiment Station’s four Research and Extension Centers support the department’s mission of enhancing the efficiency, profitability and sustainability of agricultural systems in Wyoming and the region. Faculty is also engaged in regional and international agricultural issues through a combination of basic and applied studies, extension, and training of undergraduate and graduate students. Major activities center on agronomy, weed science, plant pathology, horticulture, plant breeding, irrigation science and forage science.

The department houses 14 tenured and tenure-track faculty, three academic professionals and five professional and office staff members. The department has resident faculty at the UW Research and Extension Centers located in Lingle, Sheridan, Powell and Laramie. Description of Location The University of Wyoming enrolls ~13,500 students, including ~3,000 graduate students. Laramie is located in the Rocky Mountain region of southeastern Wyoming, about 120 miles from Denver. In addition to opportunities for academic excellence, the University of Wyoming and Laramie offer a small college-town environment with extraordinary cultural and outdoor recreational opportunities.

Description of duties JOB DESCRIPTION:
This is a full-time tenured position. Duties include administering the department’s diverse activities including research, teaching, extension, advising and university and public service in an area of plant sciences.
Qualifications sought To be considered, applicants must have attained a PhD in plant sciences or closely related field and be qualified for a tenured appointment at the rank of full professor. Candidates should have an understanding of, and commitment to, the goals of a Land Grant University and have demonstrated administrative skills and abilities. These include communication and team-building skills; the ability to work effectively with on and off-campus faculty, students, staff, administrators, and stakeholders; and experience in a faculty governance system.

Preference will be given to applicants with experience and a demonstrated ability to provide leadership for departmental and college programs on UW Research and Extension Centers; work as a liaison to agricultural and other stakeholder groups; foster collaborative research and extension programs; mentor faculty and staff; contribute to quality undergraduate and graduate education; and acquire public and private funds to support Land Grant University programs.

Because of the location of department faculty and programs at UW Research and Extension Centers as well as the main campus, some travel is associated with this position.
