Description of duties | JOB DESCRIPTION: The University of California, Division of Agriculture and Natural Resources, a statewide program with local development and delivery, is seeking a Cooperative Extension Specialist who will produce a program that will assist agriculture in the adaptation of increased climate variability brought about by climate change. To assist agriculture in adapting to climate change, the CE Specialist will create a research and extension program on alternative crops, alternative cropping patterns, the use of precision agricultural technologies and other adaptive strategies. The Specialist will develop a research program in one or more aspects of agricultural adaptation to climate change. There is a need for increased information and new technologies to manage for uncertainty and increase resilience of agricultural systems. Potential areas of research include: 1) precision technologies to manage agricultural systems (including water, soils, pests, nutrients and other chemicals), 2) precision technologies to increase the quality and scale of information needed to manage agricultural systems, and 3) modeling and software and tool development. The Specialist will work with a diverse group of stakeholders including other ANR academics, academics at CSU Fresno and UC Merced, growers, commodity organizations, government agencies (CDFA, California Department of Water Resources, State and Regional Water Resources Control Boards, U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, USDA/NRCS, local water districts) to increase agriculture resilience to climate change. The Specialist will work across policy and regulatory environments to help agriculture remain profitable while meeting environmental objectives. The Specialist will be expected to lead a program that will involve and benefit other programs within ANR. |
