Description of Employer Mississippi has unique regions of soil and climate. The Mississippi Agricultural and Forestry Experiment Station’s (MAFES) 16 branch locations serve all regions of the state. Research addresses issues important and relevant to Mississippi farmers, industry, communities and families. MAFES discoveries improve plant, animal, and food production systems to enhance commodity production and conserve the environment for the benefit of all people.

Each year, 160 MAFES scientists work on more than 585 projects. This effort has led Mississippi State University to rank number six nationally for agricultural research funding. This funding comes from a variety of sources, including taxpayers, producers, industry and consumers.

Description of Location Mississippi State University is physically located adjacent to the city of Starkville, Mississippi in the northeastern section of Mississippi.

Our beautiful award-winning campus is home to over 16,000 students and is 23 miles west of Columbus and 125 miles northeast of the capital city of Jackson. Designated as a Doctoral I university by the Southern Regional Education Board, Mississippi State University is fully accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

The Department of Plant and Soil Sciences is located in Dorman Hall on the southwestern edge of campus at the intersection of Creelman St. and Stone Blvd.

Description of duties JOB DESCRIPTION:
The candidate will plan and conduct experiments to determine the mechanisms of resistance to various herbicide modes of action. Specific research areas include, but not limited to, herbicide response bioassays, enzyme activity assays, herbicide mobility and metabolism in plants, gene sequencing and related activities, gene expression studies, and DNA fingerprinting.

The incumbent will also analyze data, prepare reports to funding agencies, present research results at scientific meetings and prepare papers for publication in refereed journals. The incumbent will coordinate with graduate students in the maintenance and upkeep of the laboratory facility as well as in procurement of laboratory supplies.

Qualifications sought A B.S. degree in Plant Science, Weed Science, or Biology or other closely related field is required. Excellent written and oral communication skills, strong statistical background, and some bioinformatics skills is proffered.
