Oakridge and Westfir sit at the base of the Cascade Mountains, situated along the Middle Fork of the Willamette River. The area is surrounded by the Willamette National Forest and numerous recreation opportunities. There are 500 miles of trails in the area for hiking, mountain biking, cross country skiing, snow shoeing, horseback riding and OHVs; a ski resort is located 30 miles away. There are lakes, rivers and reservoirs for fishing and boating, wilderness areas, numerous campgrounds, and several important scenic destinations such as Salt Creek Falls and Waldo Lake. Description of duties JOB DESCRIPTION:
This position is located at the Middle Fork Ranger District in Westfir, Oregon. This position is a terrestrial biological technician and works in the Natural Resources department and is supervised by the District Botanist. Major Position duties include;

  • Works with the botany and wildlife program to assist both departments with developing contracts and field inspections, data entry and environmental education. Attains Contract Administration Representative certification within one year.
  • Schedules, organizes and conducts field surveys for invasive plants and plans and participates in removal of weeds using chemical, manual and mechanical methods. Must obtain Oregon Herbicide Applicator license within 120 days of initial appointment to position.
  • Provides leadership and guidance for seasonal crews and volunteers who are doing weed removal.
  • Uses GIS for creating maps and entering data. Manages databases and complete yearly reports.
  • Manage KV funds and projects.
  • Assists with wildlife surveys, contract inspection and KV planning.
  • Assists other resources as needed to meet district priorities. Proactively fosters and maintains internal working relationships.
Qualifications sought
  • Must be able to obtain a Oregon public applicator license in 120 days, a Contract officer representative certification within one year and must have a valid state driver’s license.
  • Must be able to hike on uneven ground to manually, mechanically or chemically treat invasive weeds.
  • Must be comfortable with using computer software and collating and presenting data.
