Description of duties

Description of Job: Manage and execute a fully integrated basic and applied research program in soil science, focusing on arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi, plant growth promoting bacteria, and the plant rhizosphere with the goal of discovering new products and supporting existing products. 

Principal Responsibilities:

  • Provide scientific expertise in the area of soil science as a member of an interdisciplinary research team.
  • Develop and implement a research program to identify and evaluate new soil and seed applied products derived from arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi and plant growth promoting rhizobacteria.  Develop close and effective working relationships with personnel from Mycorrhizal Applications LLC (Grants Pass, OR) and SyMyco Inc.(St. Louis, MO)
  • Find new uses for and support existing products.
  • Supervise and mentor direct report(s).
  • Develop a global network of university, government, and other 3rdparty contacts that can serve as a pool of potential research collaborators to further our understanding of the plant rhizosphere and assist in the development of new products.
  • Participate in cross-functional new product development and product life cycle management teams.


Qualifications sought


  • Strong basic and applied background in soil microbiology, mycology, plant/microbe interactions and broad understanding of soil science.
  • Five years or more post-PhD experience conducting independent research.
  • Field experience with agronomic and horticultural crops and associated production practices.
  • Hands-on research experience in field, greenhouse, growth chamber and laboratory experimentation.
  • Hands-on familiarity with common laboratory equipment (e.g., HPLC, GC), field-based high-throughput phenotyping and associated data acquisition and processing
  • Applied research experience with arbuscular Mycorrhizal fungi is preferred.  Familiarity with in vitro production of mycorrhizal fungi is a plus
  • Knowledge and understanding of morphogenesis and root-shoot signaling is a plus.
  • Understanding of plant response to biotic and abiotic stresses is a plus.
  • Industry experience is a plus.


  • Demonstrated ability to lead a team of research scientists is required.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, a track record of using innovative approaches to developing new products, and a clear sense of urgency in getting things done.  Strong working knowledge of experimental design, statistics and use of associated software programs.
  • Routine use of MS software (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Prior experience with electronic notebooks is a plus.


  • PhD degree in Soil Science, Mycology, Microbiology, Agronomy, Horticulture or related field.


Travel: Domestic/International travel 15-20%
