Type of position | This is a classified staff position which is contingent upon the continuation of work and/or funding. The employee is responsible for conducting research in in the Weed Science Molecular and Physiology Laboratory. Duties include conducting research regarding herbicide physiology and molecular biology in weeds, maintaining plants in greenhouse and growth chamber, collecting and statistically analyzing data, developing experimental protocols, supervising and training new students, maintaining lab supplies, conducting special waste disposal and ensuring laboratory follow university mandated safety guidelines. |

Description of duties |
Conduct laboratory research (70%; Essential): Investigate herbicide resistant mechanisms and herbicide physiology in weedy plants and crops. Experiments are involved in DNA/RNA/Protein isolation, gene cloning, immunolocalization, herbidice metabolism and translocation.
Conduct greenhouse work (20%; Essential): Conducting research related to herbicide dose response. Maintaining plants in greenhouse and growth chamber.
Assist PI to manage laboratory (5%; Essential): Maintaining consumable supplies from PI\’s budgets and efficient stock control. Conducting special waste disposal and ensuring laboratory follows university health and safety policies. Supervising and assisting students and temporary help employees.
Assist PI to train new students or temporary help employees (5%; Marginal): Lab safety precautions. Laboratory equipment. Regular experimental protocols. |
Qualifications sought |
Minimum Qualifications: Requires an M.S. degree and a prior degree in weed science, biology, plant physiology, biochemistry, agronomy or related discipline or a B.S. degree in an agricultural or biological science related field and experience totaling approximately 3 years. Experience in molecular and/or biochemistry research. Ability to conduct research independently and work within a research team. Ability to conduct basic statistical analysis. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Ability to collect, compile, and prepare data for research reports. May be required to work with toxic, volatile and corrosive chemicals and/or carcinogenic substances. May be required to work in adverse environmental conditions. Ability to lift or carry objects weighing up to 30 pounds. Applicants who are selected as final possible candidates must be able to pass a criminal background check.
Preferred Qualifications: Ph.D. degree in agronomy, plant science, or related discipline. Experience with research regarding herbicide resistant mechanism in weeds, weed management, and plant physiology. Experience in writing scientific papers, research reports, and conference abstracts and presenting research reports at scientific meetings. |
