Postdoctoral Research Associate with Cornell University in New York State Agricultural Experiment Station, Geneva NY

Type of position Cornell University’s Specialty Crop Systems Lab is seeking a Postdoctoral Associate to support research and extension programming focused on weed management and sustainable crop production practices in New York specialty crops, including processing and fresh market vegetables, small-fruit, and perennial tree fruit. This is a 1-year funded position, with the potential for renewal contingent upon funding.

Description of Employer The research and extension program is designed to help NY growers develop multi-tactic integrated weed management practices and system approaches that enhance productivity, profitability and ecosystem services in specialty crop systems. The field research program will focus on population dynamics of troublesome weed species, herbicide evaluation and stewardship, efficacy of novel mechanical weed control methods, cover crop management within diversified cropping systems, and organic production practices.

Description of duties Seeking a person with a strong background and interest in Weed Science and/or Agroecology to join a newly-formed research and extension program focused on weed management and sustainable production practices in specialty crop systems. Activities will broadly include both applied and basic research on weed ecology and management. The individual will also participate in grant- and manuscript-writing, and will have the opportunity to actively participate in extension programming. Anticipated duties include:

1) Design and implementation of field and greenhouse experiments related to weed population dynamics, herbicide by cover crop interactions, and multi-tactic weed management strategies.

2) Data analysis and synthesis. Examples include sub-annual population matrix modeling, herbicide dose response modeling, multivariate analysis of weed communities, and cropping system-level, multi-criterial assessments

3) Participation in applied extension-research activities including small-plot herbicide evaluation, summary reports, and extension outreach (field days, workshops and written publications)

4) Lead planning efforts with project leaders and other project participants (growers, industry, etc).

Qualifications sought Ph.D degree required in Horticulture, Agronomy, Weed Science, Agroecology or related discipline. Must possess and maintain a valid U.S. driver’s license. Excellent organizational and communication skills. Well-versed in database management (Excel) and statistical software (R preferred). Preference will be given to those with a record of scholarship, strong writing skills, and strong analytical skills.
