Description of duties Position Summary:

A M.S. or Ph.D. level Graduate Research Assistantship is available to conduct research on cultural practices to influence weed-crop interactions. The research will focus on the development of a system to optimize weed suppression using variable planting depending on weed spatial distribution in row crops. The student will use in-depth growth analysis to describe crop and weed responses to canopy structure under field conditions and demographic and bioeconomic modeling to integrate the results. The student will develop skills applicable to agronomy, weed science, and plant ecology.

The incumbent will work under the guidance of Dr. Ramon Leon.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Conducting laboratory, greenhouse, and field research as needed to meet the research objectives;
  • Conducting data collection, analysis, and preparation of peer-reviewed and extension publications;
  • Travel to other research units throughout North Carolina as needed;
  • Provide technical and academic support to other projects of the Weed Science Program.
Qualifications sought Required Qualifications:

  • B.S. (for M.S. program) or M.S. (for Ph.D. program) in Weed Science, Agronomy, Crop Science, Soil Science, Botany, Ecology or a closely related field of study that has equipped the applicant with the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position
  • Excellent written and oral English skills
  • Ability to meet the entrance requirements of North Carolina State University Graduate School and the Department of Crop and Soil Sciences
  • Self-motivated and highly organized
  • Willingness to conduct field research away from the Raleigh campus 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Strong analytical and statistical skills
  • Agricultural field experience
  • Research experience
  • Plant/Crop Physiology courses
