Description of duties The Laboratory Services team is looking for an Analytical Scientist to join their Analytical Research Laboratory, supporting Scotts Research & Development. The position will report directly to the Manager of Lab Services and work closely with the staff of the Analytical Research Lab, Packaging Test Lab, Process & Formulations team, and Corporate Quality to analyze new and existing Scotts products ranging from fertilizers to pesticides.

* Develop and validate methods (25%)
* Support Quality labs with method development/troubleshooting (5%)
* Support the Scotts EPA-GLP program (15%)
* Perform routine and non-route equipment maintenance (10%)
* Opportunity Description
 
The chemist will support the work of the Analytical Research Laboratory by doing the following:
* Work with Formulations and Manufacturing personnel in the analytical characterization of new products, including troubleshooting
* Analyze research samples via spectrophotometric, chromatographic, and wet chemistry techniques
* Develop and review complex analytical methods for new products
* Record laboratory information and results in notebooks and databases
* Report results to the internal and external customers Assist with instrument maintenance
* Take part in, and potentially lead, external lab qualifications and auditsComplexity

Most difficult or most complex task or project performed by the jobholder:
* Must have a thorough understanding of analytical lab principles and procedures.

Degree to which responsibilities require original thinking (provide examples of activities):
* Moderate to High degree. Troubleshooting unexpected lab results, equipment issues, and developing analytical methods that pass EPA and State agency scrutiny.

Supervision Exercised
 
Number and titles of positions directly supervised:
* Interns or temporary labor (typically 1 associate).

Minimum Requirements
 
Education:
* Minimum B.S. degree in a physical science discipline (chemistry preferred); M.S. or Ph.D. desirable

Experience:
* At least 4-6 years of experience in an analytical lab environment
* Prior experience with method development

Knowledge:
* Proficiency with MS Excel, basic laboratory principles and preferably, this individual would have taken both general and organic chemistry

Skills and Abilities:
* Excellent organization and time management skills
* Self-driven in a busy and detail-oriented technical environment
